Something to Ponder

My 98 f150 flairside kingcab has 160k. I realize if I take real good care of it I might get another 100k or so. The body is in great shape. I was thinking of repowering it with a desiel. I know I would also have to have it rewired and put a new tranny in it. I figure 15k.
Now the question. Is it worth it? With the prices of trucks appoaching 40k and higher, I think 15k is reasonable and I would essentially have a new truck.
What do you think? Is it worth the time and energy?

I just did a search on Cars.com and there are exactly 493 results for the following search:

Make: Ford
Model: F-350
Price: Less than $15,000
Location: Anywhere in US
Year: 1998 and above

Point being, the money that you would otherwise put into changing over to diesel in your F150 could easily be spent on a newer, lower mileage truck that was meant to be a diesel.

Plus, you get to keep your F150 if you want to. Or sell it to offset the cost.

BTW, I know a lot of F350's are gasoline, but you get my point anyway I hope.

I too did a search on cars. com and for what I have, 4x4, crew cab, (I have king cab however if I were to get another truck crew would be the way to go) auto, and diesel would cost at the very least 20k and that is for a truck with 185k on it. I don't have that now and my truck is paid off. I also have the lariat package but leather doesn't make that much of a diff to me...
Point is that the truck I have has almost everything I want. To replace it, (which I would want to do not step down) would cost quite a bit. This might be a viable alternative.

You couldn't get at least $5k for your truck right now?

Bottom line is, putting a diesel engine in your gasoline-powered truck seems crazy to me. That's just my opinion.

...diesel would cost at the very least 20k and that is for a truck with 185k on it. I don't have that now and my truck is paid off.
But you have $15k to blow on an experiment like this?

I'd be more concerned about structure and suspension. Diesel is bigger, heavier, and more powerful. Added weight up front means suspension upgrades. Also, frame wasn't designed for that much HP and torque. Then with the added weight, you technically might not be able to haul more. Maybe less with the added weight. Probably tow more, but not haul more.

Personally, unless you had money to blow on an experiment, it'll be more hassle than it's worth and no way to recoupe the losses.

Well, thanks for all the advise, I will not do it. I was just thinking about it and wondered about, along with costs... Thanks for the advise...
