i have a 89 ranger with 282,000 original miles. there is no fluid in the reservior could this be why the clutch is slipping? If i add fluid will it help? I dont want to drop the tranny if I dont have to. I dont know how long it had been without fluid. It isnt hard to shift at all thats why i dont think it is the clutch
Check around the bell housing for leaks, if it is low on fluid it had to go somewhere. Maybe the hard plastic line is leaking at the lower fitting had the problem with my f150.
COUGARFIED is right, it's not just randomly disappearing. Check around the master cylinder (where the clutch pedal goes into on the firewheel), and then follow the lines. If the slave is external, check it as well.
My guess is that your slave cylinder is leaking and the fluid is getting on your clutch disc and pressure plate casuing the slipping. Time for a clutch replacement. If you have to pull thre tranny, it's a good time to replace the engine rear main seal. Don't forget to have the flywheel turned and to replace the pilot shaft bearing in the end of the crankshaft.
Also, I'd recoomend spending the extra money and purhcasing the bench bled slave cylinder/throw out bearing assembly from Ford.
BTW - at 288K miles, I might go ahead and replae the clutch master cylinder as well assuming it hasn't been replaced yet. It can't be far from failing if it's the original.
