help me guys....title???
Let me explain a little bit first. The Ford trucks of that vintage were not titled acccording to the body, they were titled according to the frame VIN. The door plate is called a WARRANTY plate, and it is not valid for title purposes - although that's what was done, as the two matched from the factory. The plate even says it is not to be used for titling purposes, but they do it anyway.
The frame VIN is on the passenger side rail, one just behind the radiator mount, and one under the cab. If you title the truck with a different VIN that doesn't match the frame, you have an illegally titled truck. VINs mismatched between the title and the frame (NOT the body!) are what will get you in trouble. Note, this rule doesn't apply to later vehicles, as the car manufacturers started stamping the bodies with the frame VIN as well. For this era of trucks, though, the bodies have no VIN.
Many states will compare the title with the frame VIN. More are doing this because unscrupulous dealers buy totalled cars in one state and sell them as almost new in another, like what happened after Katrina. Also, more states and insurance companies require a frame VIN and title match after an accident. When you move to another state, or have the truck inspected in the aftermath of an accident, the frame VIN will be compared to the title - and if they don't match, you are in for it.
If you are attempting to title the truck with the mismatched VINs in another state, you will not be able to get a title for the truck at a minimum. Many states will confiscate the vehicle right there until you can prove ownership of the frame VIN. If you sold the truck with the mismatched VINs to someone in another state, the new state will involve you as selling a stolen vehicle. The new owner will come after you to get his money back, and now you have both the law and the civil courts after you.
If you are involved in an accident and the VINs do not match, your insurance will not cover it, because it was for a different VIN. Those apples are pretty sour too.
None of these scenarios are worth bypassing title problems.
Therefore, because the body has no VIN stamped into it, you can swap the body onto another frame, and use that frame's title instead. You'll probably have to deal with a rustier frame, brakelines and the like, but you may find it much easier in the long run.
You can use a '67 - '72 frame and everything will bolt up correctly - as long as you use the same kind of frame as you have now. If you try to use a short bed frame for a long bed truck, you will have problems, and viceversa.
You might want to consider putting the body on a '73 - '79 frame, to get upgraded options like power steering and disc brakes. The cab and front end will fit fine, but you will need to do some adjustment to the bed as the frame is wider back there.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
