Dp Tuner Question

I just ordered my DP tuner and ordered the 80hp econo, 80hp tow and 120hp performance. I wanted to get some feedback from you guys as to what you think. The chips are backordered for a week so I have time to make changes if I feel necessary.
It's for an 01 Excursion 2wd. I live in florida so no hills, my wife drives it during the week, we pull our boat (about 8000lb loaded) and at least 5 passengers in the vehicle while towing. I enjoy going fast (hence the 120hp)
Do you think its necessary to have both the 80 econo and 80 tow or go with just the 80 tow and 120 performance. Or 60 tow, 80 econo, 120 perf. Or just keep it at 80 80 120?

6637 filter, 4"mbrp, BD Power gauges, tranny cooler

When I pull around 8-10000lbs with my F-250 I run into high egt's on 80, with 60 its not so much of a problem. If it was mine I would go 60,80,120. Cruising with a load I would swap it up to 80 for pulling hills better. Mainly got the high egt's accelerating and they were managable in 60.

I don't have any experience with the 80tow, but to me it seems redundant to have both the 80tow and econo. You can just tow in the 80 as long as temps are fine, or get a 40 or 60 tow... or keep what ya got!

To be honest though, the best person to answer the question is Jody... he's the one that really knows what the programs will do.

I agree with Ryan - I'd prolly get a lower first setting rather than the 2 80 settings. Call Jody and talk to him about it - I don't know how much different the 2 80 settings really are - there was only the 80 econo available when I got my chip........

When I called I spoke with Jodys wife/girlfriend/friend, I guess Jody was busy. She said the difference in the 2 80 tunes is the tow mode will shift later, hold gear longer, than the econo thus keeping rpm's up. She said that a lot of people have commented that they get the best all round driving in tow mode, I guess it feels more responsive. She also said that the same people felt they got the best mileage using the 60 tow mode. I guess I have a hard time getting the 60 hp when I know I could have 80 hp. I'm thinking now that I might change it to 60 tow, 80 econo, 120 perf.

The main difference between the 80-tow and the 80- econo is the way Jody adjusts the shift points in the tow mode. He raises the shift points so when under load so you do not lug the motor. The fuel mapping in the econo is also different from the tow modes.

As we discussed on the phone it really is a preferrence which one you will like driving around town in. Alot of our customers have had better fuel economy in the tow modes around town. Commuting or long distance travel running empty the 80 econo is what most will use for better fuel mileage. It all depends on towing weight and the elevation as to what tow mode to use. Some of our customers have also towed in the 80 econo mode as long as you tow by your gauges and watch the egt's. You are in FL so I really don't see a problem doing that. Since this is your wife's DD it may be that you get a tune and let her try it driving around town. It is ultimately up to you what you put on the chip as far as programs. If you are not satisfied just send the chip back and you can try another tune. We have a 30 day trial, so if you don't like it we can change it. I hope this may have helped your decision.

Basic setup

First, I don't know much about tuners, but I'm interested in getting the DP tuner. I don't really need a lot of special settings, just the following:
  • Good MPG for open freeway driving with & without a trailer.
  • Horsepower for towing a gooseneck 4-horse trailer over the passes and logging roads around where I live.
So, what minimum setting are recommended? I don't want a lot of choices. From what I gather, each setting costs extra and is programmed into the unit you order. Right?

Also, I'm assuming I will need the F5 chip and the push button switch. How easy is the installation? Can someone as clueless as me handle the installation?

Thanks in advance.

Just call and talk to Jody about what you want to do and how much money you want to spend. I only got the 40tow/80 econo/tow and 120/race and I don't see a need for anything else on a truck with a stock turbo..

I get 17 with my econo tune. Which is 1.5mpg better than stock.
