I'm usually in the Ranger (motorized wheel-barrow) section, but need to ask a question in behalf of a buddy. I know nothing about diesels...
His 97 7.3 PSD won't start. He'd been driving around town, stopped by the house for a few minutes, and tried to leave again when this happened. It cranks but no start. A little spritz of starting fluid and it fires right up. I tried my code reader, but got an error when trying to pull any codes.
Never, ever use Ether on these trucks. It used to start and keep started an old mechanically injected diesel but it will not start an electronic diesel so that it starts and keeps running. All the electronics need to be in sync and operational for these electronic wonders to run. But-good news. You probably didn't blow up your motor and these things are easier to fix than you would think. It is very easy to blow up these motors using ether, but you would probably know if you did it. It would sound like a running Ranger with one or two plugs out.
If your buddy's truck started back up after it cooled down for a couple of hours then it is definitely IPR o-rings. Check the oil level in the HPOP reservoir on top of the front of the engine. There is a little hex head screw plug which will open the reservoir. It needs to be filled to within a 1/2" of the top. Dirty oil can actually keep one of these babies from starting, too. You can check the fuel pressure on the schrader valve when you're cranking, too. Can't remember exactly but you should have at least 25 psi when cranking, maybe a little more.
Thanks for the responses. I guess he's taken the truck in to the dealer and just paid for a diagnostic. They say it's the glow plug relay. He hasn't replaced it yet, but we'll see what happens....

doesnt make sense to me.
but on that note help your friend save some money. tell him to get a gpr from napa or get a stancor and change it himself. 20-60 bucks way less than what the dealer will charge.
i still dont think its the problem but hey we are all wrong sometimes.
