If those are your only two choices you're considering, I'd go with the Shell. Mobil has been changing their formula around, and I don't think it's been as good as the stuff in the past. Plus, Mobil is more expensive around here.
If you'll consider other options, look into the Schaeffer 9000. It's a full synthetic diesel oil. I just switched to the stuff several weeks ago and my first UOA (Used Oil Analysis) came back looking better than it had when I was using Mobil.
Well I used Mobil 1 since about 15K mikes. I now have 66K so about 50K miles. IT seems most think that I need new injector o-ring. I remember researching years ago the synthetic oil issue and one of the knocks was it doesn't swell seals as well as conventional oil. Could this be the reason my o-rings needs replacing after 50K miles?
the mobil 1 is a true full syn. the rotella t is a group III hydro-cracked dino thats why its less expensive. mobil 1 hasnt been changing their oil just the packaging. what used to be "Truck and Suv" is now "Turbo Diesel" but both of those as well as Delvac 1 are the same thing. of those two i would use the mobil 1 (and do) good luck finding it though all the old Truck and Suv is pretty much gone and i have not seen the repackeged Turbo diesel stuff on the shelfs yet. i had to buy a gallon of Delvac 1 the other day so i could add a quart.
I want to start using a synthetic oil in my '02 SD. What oil is a better choice,Shell RotellaT or Mobil1 Turbo diesel truck?
When I bought my 02 last year, I saw the dealer sign saying $100 for a diesel oil change with regular dino oil(probably recycled).
I researched it myself and figured I could change my own oil with Shell Rotella T 15W-40 (3 gallons and 3 quarts)+ Ford motorcraft model 1995 filter for $45.00
I have since switched to Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 and I am spending twice as much on the oil.
cost of change is now 75.00 with filter, still saving $25 and it is great oil
my only other choice would be AMSOIL
I have used Rotella 15-40 since 1st change at 3000 miles. Now has 172,000 plus and it uses absolutely no oil between changes and it is available most every place. I've been having mine done lately at WallyWorld TLE. They get about $46.00 for lube, oil and filter. And they leave it a quart low (my instructions) 'til it gets all circulated and sets, then I add enough to top it off. I'm heading for retirement in about 11 months and will be selling the old horse. Got to get that '05 PSD better broke in for some traveling.
