I just put a new high pressure PS hose on my 79 f150 4x4 that I bought at a local auto supply. It leaked badly at the flare nut on the PS pump when I first installed it. My experience has been to only torque a flare fitting just enough to stop any leaking, but not so much that it will over stretch the coned shaped flare. I had to torque this new fitting at the pump fitting so hard , I thought I was going to strip the female threads, but I didnt care. It stopped dripping.
Many power steering connections are a metal-to-metal seal. The metal port in the pump or steering box (whichever end is leaking) may be damaged. If the port is damaged the component will need to be replaced. Most often the ports are damaged by someone tightening a hose assy with grit/dirt on the end. Hydraulics must be kept absolutely clean to function properly.
Whenever hydraulic assy parts are changed (including hoses) or the unit is serviced a filter must be installed in the return line.
