Has anyone added a backup/reverse sensor system? If so, which kind ultrasonic, doppler radar, microwave, etc.?
Does Ford have an add-on kit?
I am in the process of adding an aftermarket system made by Guardian Alert (should have it done early this coming Saturday). A friend of mine won the kit in a raffle a while back and wasn't interested in putting it on his vehicle......so he made me a deal I couldn't refuse. It is a simple license plate installation, but they have commercial grade also. The local para-transit buses have the commercial grade on them, and they are very effective.
My local Ford dealer also sells a similar license plate mount back up aid. You can see this one on carjuice.com or on the manufacturers web page reverseguard.com.
I just installed a system by Goldeneye. Somewhere out of Taiwan. Works great. Had to drill holes in the bumber for the outer sensors. Used the factory holes for the middle of the bumber hidden behind the plastic shroud. Works great.
I was in a friends mercedes that had this function. It was useful for parking situations where you really needed to get close to whatever was in front on you when manuvering into place.
Ok,, here is what I found. I bought a new sensor and swapped them out 1 at a time. Did not work. Really tight fit for the 2 center censors behind the rec. hitch.
I did find the wiring harness was loose and some of the plugs did not want to stay attached to the sensors. This was not the issue during testing as I kept them tight to test. I can see the wiring harness needs replacing. Don't think this will fix the issue though. My symptoms are light on the switch all the time and won't switch off.
So for now no futher work until I have a new harness "next month$$" Jim
I finally settled on the Bully Dog system. It has 2 front sensors and 4 rear sensors. Found at Alligator Diesel Performance. Jayme Hall was very helpful in providing info.
Best of all it comes with a warranty.
I also have the factory back up sensor and have a cap on my truck so it really helps with the vehicles that like to sneak behind me when I am backing up or the stupid people who know you are backing up because the vehicle is moving and just can't wait for 3 seconds for you to back up. Had one person get really mad when they almost got bumped by my truck and someone else asked them why they were walking behind a moving truck before I got a chance. There comment was why should they have to wait for me to back up when they were in a hurry.
I wouldn't have a truck again with out the backup aid. I did fender bend with 2 vehicles with old truck that got into my blind spots. For some reason they don't understand with a cap on your are just like the semi's if you are not in my mirrors I can't see you. Now I don't have to as my sensors catch what I can't see and I am very happy with that.
I got one of the 8 sensors system from gearflag.com, the 4 sensors to be installed in front bumper and 4 sensor to be installed in rear. It's really cool.
