Exclamation Stumped! No power! 302

I have an 87 F-150 with a 302 EFI. I recently pulled the engine down and put a different cam in it. When I put it back together, it idles decently, and I can rev it up while it's sitting and it is fine, but when it gets under a load like you try to drive it, it pops back through the manifold and has no power. I have double checked the timing. I think it's running extremely lean as the cats glow red if you run it for a while. I have worked on this truck for a week and am losing patience in it. I put a new set of plugs, new plug wires, cap and rotor. I need to get it going to pull my trailer, but I guess it's got to pull itself first.

sounds like the plug wires may be in the wrong order.

from another post earlier:

firing sequence on 1987-93 engines is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Because cylinders 4/2 and 7/8 fire in sequence, they're the ones to keep an eye on.

I double checked that with the Chilton's book. That is what it acts like, though.

I installed the cam and made sure the marks on the two pulleys that hold the timing chain were aligned vertically. There was a dot on a tooth and a dot in a notch on the other pulley. When I installed the distributor, I put number one cylinder on TDC and installed the distributor with the rotor pointing to number one on the cap. I set the timing to 10 deg. BTC with the light. I forgot to mention in my first post that the truck is turning the spark plugs black with carbon.

Where did you get the cam?
Not all 302 EFI have the same firing order, the newer ones are the same as the 351 EFI. Try the other firing order, if it works you are not the first poster on here to have this problem.
