I'd like to list a car for sale on Craigslist but I'm not very familiar with that site. Has anyone here ever listed something on that site and how successful was it? Also, is there a fee or is it a free service?
its free, except for a couple cities.... it gets alot of traffic, Ive sold a few things and bought a few things on it, Seems like theres WAY more tire kickers than takers, Ive gotten 20 emails about my 300 dollar motorcycle but only 2 people have re-responded to my reply, but on the samec note, I email alot of questions to sellers too.
I've used it with prtty good success. I found my Taurus SHO on craigslist, and sold some parts and a couple of motorcycles. Had people drive from more than 2 hrs. away to buy stuff. (I'm out in the boonies.)
But you do tend to get the tire kickers and lowballers. I had one guy tell me yes, he wanted the tranny I had listed, I told him just how far away I was from him and he came right up after work anyway. When he got here he said that I should sell it to him for half price becuase he'd had to come so far...(duh!)
But overall, I like the site. Been good for me so far.
You do have to watch out for your 419 scammers on Craigslist, though....
That aside, I have put various thing up that didn't sell. Mostly people who couldn't read that i was in the Houston area and they'd have to pay for shipping (what a concept) to get things to them...
That reminds me, time to get out and get pics of my Camaro so I can e-mail them to my Ebay seller. Gotta get a down payment on that 94 Mustang GT convertible I'm drooling over...
I've bought a few things there - including the 1986 F250 Diesel 2WD that lead to me joining this board. Some good deals to be had there - I got my truck for $1000 including a second engine.
I've listed one vehicle on there too - 95 Chevy Astro AWD. Sure, there were some tire kickers and lowballers who responded to the ad, but the guy who ended up buying the van first saw it on the list, so no complaints here........
BTW, Alfredb1979, what is a "419 scammer"?

I sold my old truck on craigslist, and yesterday I bought a lift kit for my 79 F-250 on craigslist. It can get frustrating at times when the people who aren't seriously interested in what your selling waste your time, but it's free, and it gets a lot of exposure.
Sold and bought on craigslist. But as jake00 has already mentioned, a lot of (virtual) tire kickers for sure. Just be prepared for the 'no-shows' who promise to come out and take a look whilst you've contorted your social schedule around them.....just a different crowd of buyers for some reason.
Personally, I prefer to use the "runs 'till it sells" Trader ads when selling a vehicle or RV.......cost money, but a little bit better crowd who show-up when they say they are. JMO
Had great luck on craigslist- but it's heavily used on the West Coast (the dealership uses it as well). It's free for private parties, but I would tag-team ads (local paper, auto trader, and craigslist).
It's free here, and I actually bought my motorcycle from there. What I like about it is that it hides your actual email address so you don't get people spamming you.
I sold a Lumina on there, but my truck I'm selling now isn't getting any luck. Overall I like the site. You can find great deals, especially in their free section.
The Baltimore one is free thank goodness.
But keep an eye out for people who can't spell and want to send you $1000 more than your price so you can ship it to them. Make sure to put Cash deals only in the listing.
The only thing you'll pay for is to put a job listing up in one of the major cities - San Francisco, New York, maybe Chicago, etc. Everything else is free.
If someone offers to send you a cashier's check for more than your asking price, run away.
I had a bunch of broken up pieces of cement from an area about 300 sq.ft. in my back yard that I was going to pay someone to haul away. My wife advertised "free cement pieces" on craigs list and much to my suprise, we had five people respond. We got rid of all of it.
