I'll be starting on my 61 Unibody street-rod project soon. Plans include IFS (probably Mustang II), power steering and brakes, a GM column and (putting on flak vest...) a crate Chevy Vortec 350 and 700R4 tranny. I have read the first 10 pages of the 61-66 forum and don't see much about folks going the SBC route. If the mention of bowtie powertrains will get me tarred and feathered in here please let me know and I'll desist now - lol. Otherwise I'm sure I will find your collective advice along the way extremely valuable. By the way I like Fords just fine and have owned three. The 61 has had two owners - my Grampa who bought it new and myself after he died in 82. I'd love to keep it original but with the 223, 3 speed and those rear gears it's almost unbearable to drive, especially on the highway - thus the plans for a more enjoyable ride. I know some guys are very brand loyal and I just don't want to offend anyone by using the "C" word in here - thanks!

Haven't read about anybody running Chevy gear here. I guess a more obvious choice would the the all mighty 5.0 roller motor 87-95. They make gobs of power and aren't much more expensive than a Chevy anymore. You can get an adapter to run a 700R4 behind a 5.0 now too.

Thanks Jimmy - I wasn't aware that you could get an adaptor like that now. I already have the 700R4 - main reason for leaning toward the SBC. Good to know about the roller motor though. Thanks for the reply - I'll lay low on the Ch**y stuff in here
I'm not exactly sure where to get it. I have read of Mustang drag cars that use them. You might try looking at some 5.0 Mustang magazines for more info.

Kris you may still get flack for even considering it. If you do use the 700R just keep it under your hat. Sometimes folks get real upset if they think your going to currupt your truck with GM parts. You'll get all kinds of answers to your post, or nothing at all. But hey it is YOUR truck. I have a 61 also and it is mostly Ford. If you have any questions you don't want ot ask out loud drop me a line at shelekelley(No Email Addresses In Posts!) oh yah checkout my gallery. Good luck, Rich.
why would you use a 700R4 when you could use a Ford AOD? The Aod requires no wiring to lockup the convertor like the C%^&*Y. There is a place that makes AODs for sbc, bbc, big block Fords, and Mopars. Sell the 700R4 to some schmuck that can't change gears in his chevy as easy as we can with our 9" rearends.
