Determining Existing Paint Type
I have read that if you take a rag with lacquer thinner and wipe it over your old finish, you can tell what kind of paint it is. One thing I read said if the paint comes off easily it is enamel and if you need to rub it hard, it is lacquer. Another I read said, if the paint rubs off it is lacquer, but if it wrinkles it is enamel. What is correct?
I did it on my truck and the paint comes off real easy on the rag.

Enamels tend to wrinkle real quick when attacked by laquer thinnner, which is what happened during your test. Existing laquer paint when wiped with a rag will dull the finish and if wet enough will remove some paint from my experiences.
