I have the standard one speed wipers in my '66. The passenger side works fine but the drivers side has quite a bit of slop in it. You can grab the wiper arm and move it an inch or two on it's arc. (It's snug on shaft and the entire wiper shaft moves when you push it.) The passenger side seems pretty tight. When running the driver's side transfers that slop to it's movement and slaps the base of the windshield after each swipe.
I'm assuming something is worn out in the wiper mechanism(s)-duh. Where do I start? What pieces are the ususal suspects? Where can I get the parts?
Make sure your chrome retaining nut is tight against the shaft. It needs to sit sung atop the chrome ring between the nut and the body. Both pieces HAVE to be used. This should cure your shaft movementin and out. Under your dash, your driver's side wiper linkage has a slim rubber grommet press-fitted into it's end. The shaft linkage snugly fits thru this, and is secured with a small washer and the clip. The linkage from both sides fits onto the single motor shaft, secured again with clips. Check the tightness on each part back to the motor. Just a thought, 67-72 wiper linkage will not work on the 61-66's. The slap of the wiper too low on the windshield can be fixed by bending up the wiper and CAREFULLY pulling it at the shaft area straight off the shaft and moving it the splines necessary for proper fit. Don't pry on it, the metal is soft on the wiper are and might get damaged..
