fuel needle issue

I have a 53 truck that was converted to 12 volt (a 56 fuel guage)

I have original fuel sending unit -and also a new one from Dennis carpenter

Guage has not been very accurate. i just filled the tank, and with the old unit in, the guage read 3/4 full. I put the dennis carpenter one in, and when I turn the ignition, it shoots up to just past the full mark where it should be, but over the next 45 seconds the needle slowly wobbles back to about halfway beween 3/4 and FULL. The new carpenter sender is slightly more accurate but,
what could be causing this reading to slip down after it initially reads correct?
ps I know the ground is good, its all new wires and connections off the sender

All Ford fuel guages were 12 volt up until 1987. THey went to 12 volts that year. You need a constant voltage regulator to reduce the voltage to 6 volts. It mounts on the back of the inst cluster. The 56 guage was an oddity, it was 12 volts for that year only. 57, they went back to 6 volts because of so many warranty problems with that guage. I'd just put the correct year guage in and wire one of these in place. 12v in, 6 v out to the guage. It reduces power like a signal flasher, but at a faster rate. Get one for a late 50's-early 60's car or truck, it has spade connectors. THe later ones use a snap connector like a 9 volt battery top. Napa or CarQuest has them.
