I am looking at an alternative engine to my 302 in my scout that is not very big but will wiegh 5000 lbs. Strokers exceed my budget! I am looking at a junkyard block; using the block, crank, rods, and heads. I would overhaul the motor to stock with a stump puller valve timing, cheap headers, 4 barrel aluminum intake and holley 4 barrel, new ignition msd/ duraspark dizzie. I will do home port job and valve job with the help of my unlce who has done this for 30 years. I want good torque about 500 ft/lbs form idle to 4000 rpm which I would occassionally reach. I would like 12 mpg. I would run 33" tires equivelant of a 4" lift on an early bronco, NV 4500 with 4.09:1 and mabe narrowed dana 60 or ford 9" and dana 44 front. I have a $1000 celing for this motor.
I understand that the 460 is a dependable engine and that is what I am looking for.
you.....dont ask for much do ya now...
for that kind of goal torque wise you best start with a big block since you arent doing aftermarket heads and what not...but your milage dream is a bit off dude. Early year big block, hog the heads out...careful cam selection, match the intake and carb to the cam. Either way you look at it, you best be ready to deviate from one of your goal numbers there, weather it be MPG, power figures....or budget. I have a fuelie 460 in my truck, stock rebuild, all stock, factory numbers claim to be like 410ft #'s torque, and i get 11 mpg with 39's as of so far. And even with low buck stuff, i still am over a grand...I wish you luck
Brian
One plus in your advantage is that I believe the Scout is a much lighter truck than the usual 250/350 that the 460 came in. I get 11-12mpg in my 94 F250 4WD supercab long bed 4.10 with E4OD. My truck hits about 7,800 on the scales with passengers and full tanks and shell.
If you don't get too wild on the rebuild you may achieve your mileage goal since you aren't dragging the weight around. And I bet that sucker is scary quick if you can keep the tires from smoking.
Your budget may be a bit light tho unless you are buying used parts. Port and Polish homestyle is fun but for street driving you won't get a lot of benefit. P&P really makes a difference when you are building a high winding engine with a lot of mods. But since your uncle is helping and I assume it is free, it is worth learning and doing.
Take pictures, you will remember this if this is your first engine rebuild.
