First off I must warn everyone that my automotive knowledge is very limited. That being said I would like to pick your brains about a couple of noises I'm getting from my 00 6.8 X. First, my brake pedal is quite noisy. It squeaks after I've run the truck for a few minutes and it sounds loudest under the hood and inside the cab. I'm pretty sure it is not the brake pads. I'm thinking maybe a master cylinder. Anyone familiar with this? Second is a ticking type sound coming from the undercarriage. No matter how far I drive when I cut the motor off and exit the vehicle I can hear this ticking or popping noise coming from under the care. It is not constant or repetitive, but sounds like it is coming from more than one spot. Seems to be worse if I have been getting on the gas pedal rather than being gentle. This is my first Ford since a 96 Windstar and I'm hoping I didn't get a real doozy. Both noises sure weren't apparant when I test drove it almost a month ago. Other than that the X has been a real treat. Plenty of power and better MPG from the V10 than I expected.
the first noise is most likely the rubber grommet where it goes through the fire wall. probably need to lube it. the ticking, is just the exhaust cooling down, they all do it.
My x's pedal makes some noise also and is a bit hard for the amount of stopping power. The first part is probably the brake booster as opposed to the MC or could be just the pedal assy. itself. Crawl down there and work the pedal after it has begun to make the noise you described. If it is not coming from the assy. itself, get the booster checked. The ticking you hear is more than likely the exhaust, specifically one of the cats. Does this X have a new exhaust or some new exhaust components? The metal on exhaust components will make noises like that when newer as the metal expands and contracts from heat and cool. I hope this helps and I am not way off.
Thanks for the replies. The exhaust doesn't look like it has any new componets. I wasn't sure if the noise was due to that big 'ol engine running strong. The only other time I've ever heard the same noise was when Crown Vic patrol cars were abused during pursuits and such. The brake noise I will get checked out. I did get an extended warranty and hope to never have to use it, but then again I kind of expect a little upkeep on a 6 year old truck.
