lowering spring towers

well I did a tune up on the Bronco, and I'd planned on lowering the spring towers to make up for the rear being up. Well went to take off pass. side tire, and 2 of the lugs just spun and spun. I pulled on the lugs, and there on there I'm thinking the splines on the stud spun out. I just put rotors on last week, and I reused the studs and they all went in tight with some persuation from the air hammer. Any body ever run into this, can I get to the studs from the back if I were to take off the dust sheild? If not, how do I get the dang tire off? thanks guys.

oo man, that could end up being a job. only way to take the dust sheild off is to pull everything off cause its right behind the spindle! you could cut the dust shield up so that you can get to the lug headz. i dont remember but i think you might be able to at least see them. if possible see if you can tack weld the lug in place (guess you already thought of that!! LOL

if you have a set of torches or can get to one prolly your best bet is to just cut the lug and stud off. you will need to completely deflate the tire and remove the valve stem. is the wheel steel? i hope that'll make things easier.

Yea its a steel wheel, I was hoping to tack them in place, and just spin em' off, but I guess I'll find out, but with this little bump it'll probly get pushed back till next weekend. Are you saying just blow down the the center of the stud, or shave it off?

i've had that happen. my solution was a bit more neanderthal- i just got a BFH and a big punch and whacked it a few times and broke the stud off. i don't think i'd do this with a nice set of wheels that i cared about but i just had some old ratty steel stockers on it. had to break 2 studs on a 3/4 ton and still had the tire offf within 20 minutes or so. might be worth a try...

I've had that happen quite a few times. Now I aotomaticly weld the studs to the back of the hub. Once I was able to bend the dust plate out of the way far enough to get a take weld on.

i guess you could also try drilling all the way through the lug and stud. is the lug nut open where you cn see the threads or is it a closed style?

have you tried using the tire as a lever and try binding the lug nut/stud?

After lifting the vehicle and placing it on jackstands, take off the lugs from the good studs. Then pull the tire towards you while taking the lugnuts off with an impact wrench. The best way is to pull it from the top with the bad stud at the top. I have even used this method by hand removing wheels on front drum trucks.
