Damper installation tips

I am trying to reinstall the damper on my 312 Y-block. So far I have managed to strip the cap bolt's front 1/4 trying to use it to "pull" the damper on. Two questions, how do I get the damper on and is the crank shaft wrecked or will a new bolt hold the damper on adequately. (The engine is still in the truck)

OK somebody out there must know how to do this. I got a new cap bolt and have tapped the whole so the threads are good. Is there a trick to putting the damper on or do I just use a hammer and piece of wood and beat the thing into place.

The installers I have seen are basically a long threaded bolt with a couple of washers and a nut. Install the bolt-don't bottom it out, put some grease on the washers, and tighten down the nut while holding the bolt head. That way you are not trying to draw the damper in with the bolt itself and having it strip. Leave the timing cover loose so that the seal does not get damaged while installing the damper.

That is a hard one to get back on. They sell the balancer installers at nappa and other places. I used a wood and hammer trick but few weeks later the damper came loose from the pulley.

Thanks for the tips. I greased the damper and crankshaft and used a piece of wood and hammer the thing on until it wouldn't go any further. it seems to be in all the way. I don't know how it can come loose with the spline unless it didn't slide all the way on.
