I have a 72 Ranchero with mildly built 460/C6, with 31 spline 3.91 traction lock differential. I also have a second physically identical complete axle assembly, drum to drum, with a 28 spline 3.00 ratio (non-traction lock). I am perfectly happy with the 3.91 trac lock diff for local driving, but I plan to occasionally take this vehicle cross-country and would like to be able to switch to the 3.00 diff for those longer trips.
I know that I can switch out the entire axle assembly, but that's a pretty big job and a lot of weight to be working with. What I would like to know is whether I could just switch the carriers if I also switch the axle shafts, and will those 28 spline shafts bolt up in place of the 31 spline shafts? Any other issues I'm overlooking???
Any help/comments appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. The lug patterns are the same for both axles (5 x 4 1/2).
I had read somewhere that the bolt/nut size where the axle shaft bolts up was different for 28 and 31 spline shafts, so wasn't sure whether that would create a problem in swapping the shafts. I need to pull the shafts and take a look anyway because although I know that my 3.0 open diff is 28 spline, at this point I'm only taking the word of the previous owner about the 3.91 trac loc, who told me that its a 31 spline that came out of a wrecked boss 429 Mustang.
