I was working at the local mudbogg this weekend and was ughh...answering mother nature in the woods and saw a 61-66 Ford Pickup(i own a 66). Went over to look at it a little closer and it was a unibody, started to walk away and noticed the front pumpkin. Needless to say I about answered mother nature again. What I am wondering is this....did Ford ever produce a unibody 4x4???if so h0ow rare of a truck is this??Thanks fer the help..By the way....the guy said he would sell the truck to me
Ford didn't build it. The unibody construction dosen't have any flex. This would cause the body to bow or crack under severe off road conditions. Ya it might look cool but I wouldn't take it rock hoppin.
Thanks for the info. I kinda thought ford didnt produce one just it looked to clean to have been pieced together. I am pretty sure it was a unibody...I wont in best state of mind though(i.e.mudbogg). If it is just a regular pickup that is a 4x4 how rare is that??What kind of front axle did they run(this looks like a closed knuckle 44). What kind of transfer case.(it is removed fromt eh truck along witht he engine and tranny..all i can tell you is that case is HEAVY!!). The body is in great condition except for the doors and hood. I have two doors and a hood that are in excellent shape from my 66..Would it be worth fooling with?? Would the trucks frame be strong enough?? What about the steering??Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

p.s.-please dont tell me to just buy a 70s model truck,I am workin on gettin one but nobody else around here has a lifted and built 61-66 ford also aint got much money so it will be kinda cheap to piece this truck together this way....thanks again fer yer help and opinions!!
I did some research and this is one of the famous Ford grey areas. I seen where when the unibody was introduced, Ford "found out" that it flexed too much and came out with the 4 x 4 using the 57-60 box. It almost seems possible that in early '61, there could have been a few unibody 4 x 4s produced. If you have doors from a '66, they will not work on a Uni. Look at the crease mark in the middle of your '66 door. The unibody had a straight gently sloping crease that matched the other body lines. I'm not a 4x4 fan, but if you like it, fix it up! It sure beats that old truck just sitting around not being used for anything!
I have 66 doors on my 63 Unibody and they will fit although the bodyline is different.... which means that both doors must be changed. The 66 door has a "scallop" in the body line toward the front of the door while the 63 has more of a straight body line.
