Hi, my name is Brannon and i have a 66 F-100 camper special. I have a 390 in it right now. I had an electrical fire in it and fried some of the wires what i would like to do is replace all the wiring in it with larger wire. Is this difficult? do you guys have any suggestions on an easy way to do this? Anyone know how much something like this is going to run me? I would like to do it very nice and have it looking sharp if anyone has any input it would be useful. Thanks alot!!!!! Brannon
Try www.painlessperformance.com They will have a complete heavy gauge wiring harness for your truck with easy to follow instructions. You can call with specific questions at 1 800 54wires. Good luck Rich.
Rick,
So i went to the website you told me to. I want to get a universal harnessing kit? Have you done this and is it easy to do? And do you know how much this will run me? Thanks for the help! Brannon
try www.ezwiring.com they have an 18 fuse/21 circuit universial wiring harness. And its less than 200$ unlike some other companies that go towards 500$ I'm planning on using their harness in my '62.
Hey thanks guys... do you guys know if i would want the 12 or 18 circut wiring harness? and how difficult are these things to put in? Thanks alot for all of your help!! Brannon
Ok guys the more i look into this the more im worried that i wont be able to do it. Has anybody out there done this and how easy is it the EZwire site seems very confusing to me. I would like to change all the lights and everything while im doing this. I have had very little exsperiance with the electical. Again any input would be helpful. Thanks alot for all the help already. Brannon
Brannon I've only dealt with the Painless harness it was for a buddies Cobra kit. It had good easy to follow instructions. Everything was color coded and went toghether nicely. If you take your time with a good quality setup you shouldn't have any trouble. If you have to you can lay out the harness alongside the exsisting one and replace wires one at a time. The Painless setup I used had all the wires labled. I just had to run it to each component and plug it in or use butt connectors. Hope this helps. Good luck, Rich
The factory wiring harneses separate at the firewall at the large connectors (with some careful prying!) I would find a truck in the boneyard and grab the entire harness that goes under your dash. This would be cheaper, would be correct, and should be an easy install. Just some thoughts...If you have the extra gauge dash in your camper special, the factory separate harness from your amp gauge to the junction box is a one piece item. Use extreme care if you refab a new one that you use the same HEAVY wire. This is a great place fir a fire to start again!
Look at your stock fuse box. Count the # of fuses it holds. That will give you a good indication on what harness to get. Also take into concideration future add ons. ie stereo, amp, electric fan, and things like that. Remember that wiring is just like plumbing. Water and electricity both run one way. It has to start here and end there. All of the harnesses are very easy to understand whne you study the wiring schematic. If you don't have one do yourself a favor and get one. It will helps you understand how and why things work the way they do. Not to mention what plugs where. Hope this helps.
The painless is actually easy and if I remember right they stamp the whole legnth of the wire with the wire's purpose on the color coded wire. I helped a freind put one in his 53 chevy and did not take to long, Thing to remember is are you planning to update your truck with newer items such as electronic gages, computer, sound system etc. Then go with a larger fuse set. My truck I plan on using their larger fuse set because I plan on taking my 5.0 out of my grand marque w/aod a/c etc and put into my 63 in next couple of years so I'll need the larger # of fuses. Hope that helps. Check out classic Truckin back issues they used one of painless set ups in a 55 ford truck. Sometimes cheaper is not always easier.
