Ok some kid at school had an old turbo lyin around in his garage and its in pretty good shape so i "took it off his hands." Anyways im taking advanced welding and metal fabrication in school and i am wondering if it would be at all possible to make my own turbo system. I think it is wastegated, not all sure it has what looks to be a wastegate on the exhaust part of the turbo but ionno. I was planning on looking at pics of the banks system, and seeing what parts they use and bending and welding my own peices etc. Anyone think its possible? Im a student and dont have money for a new one so i figure why the heck not!
well, the way i see it is the most you can do is either get your shop instructor ticked off at you, or get a turbo on your rig for nothing more than the sweat equity.
be a great learning experience for you. The biggest problem would be the pedestal mount for the turbo itself. They are a cast piece with an internal drain and fit into the hole in the rear of the valley pan. The exhaust is mostly bent tubing excepting the y connector for the manifolds to join and flow exhaust into the turbine.
oh, by the way, we are all students ... every day is a learning experience and the older we get, the smarter we get.
Its a fairly small turbo, a friend of mine has the banks on his idi 7.3 and the turbo's are exactly the same size. The banks one just has all the shielding on it. It is wastegated, and there is a hollow tube going into the area between the turbines, i guess its an oil thing for the bearings. were making the plate to mount it to the exhaust today to see how much air the thing will push. If its a lot then ill probably just use it as a muffler because I love that whistlin sound TD's have. If it blows just a little bit, i might just hook a hose up to my intske for a little extra air flow. If i do rig it to the engine, itll look somewhat like an STS kit where it is mounted under the truck wrather then in the engine compartment. Seems to me like theyre kits are easier to maintain/work on then one mounted in the engine compartment. My friends banks is SO HARD to get to, its like u gotta cut out the firewall jus to work on it and i dont want that. Ill post tomorrow on how the mounting goes, and thanks for yalls help!
