Transmission fluid change question
I'm trying to change the fluid in my 99 Expedition, EB, 5.4, no trailer package. I usually just remove the top line from the radiator and start the car. That just pumps out around four courts though. I tried to use a beer bong on the radiator to push new fluid in, but it wasn't enough pressure.
So, if I pour more fluid in the transmission through the fill, will the new fluid come straight out of the top hose...or...will it go through the torque converter and push out more old fluid?
Thanks!
Brian
Every "how to" that I've read says to drain the pan first, then pump out until you see air in the line, Fill it back up with the same amount of ATF, then repeat until you have added the same amount of ATF as the total capacity for your tranny/TC.
This would indicate to me that you're not just pumping out new fluid, but you should be able to tell if you're pumping out old fluid just by the color of the oil.
Which tranny do you have? My 4r70W takes 13 total quarts. I also pumped out 4 quarts at a time, then repeated. I cheated though, and didn't drain the pan first. Couldn't see the point.
Also, as I learned the hard way, make sure you use Mercon V if you have the same tranny as I do.
Drain the tranny at the pan. Drain the TC by cycling the engine at the crank until a small plug is visible through the sight hole at the bottom of the front end of the tranny. Now disconnect both lines and blow compressed air through.
