ok so i have a 1977 f150 4x4 and recently at 116k the rear end made a bad knocking sound like if you hit it with a sledge hammer when i was putting it from revers to drive (auto). the rear end had been going bad in it for a while now anyways so we just drove it as is and made sure it always had plenty of fluid. well when it made that clunking sound it started grinding on the way home and got louder and louder and ended up cracking the rear axel housing, theres a slit about 4-5 inches vertically which looks like the ring started eating though it. should i bother finding a new axel housing or do you think i could just weld the old one closed again and re-use it. second question is there is no tag on there anymore so i dont know what gears were in it so how will i know which to replace it with. and thrid question is i need to find a new drive shaft for the rear axel because the splines on this one are about an 1/8 inch thick from wear over the years so i need to find a new one but the only ones ive seen have been for broncos.
If stock, your truck will have 3.50 gears front and rear.
You could go to a junkyard and find a ford 9" rear end out of a 4wd and get it, b/c it will have same gears, and get the driveshaft, b/c it will be the same length, and if it isn't in the best shape(driveshaft), then bring it to a driveline shop, and give them both driveshafts to make one good one.
ive looked at broncograveyard.com and they have a full used rear axel for 400 http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-..._open_used.htm which i could just swap out or they also have just a rear housing for $150 which i could put a new ring and pinion in it, but what else would i have to replace, like what parts are a must when you change the ring and pinion?
