I have the chance to RE-aquire a '61 shortbed unibody pickup that I once had. The truck is a basket case, but is rust-free for the most part. It would make a fantastic hot rod. My question is, who makes bolt-in or weld-in IFS kits for these trucks? I can't seem to find ANY for this year model. Everything seems to stop at 1956. Anyone know??
the front IFS has been covered a lot in here.. I would search the forum for it. you should have many choices available, especially if you are mod savy.
i think fatman makes them too...google him..
others in here will step in and really fill you in as i am not 100 sure about the 61's.
go ahead and grab that 61 up, and make a nice rod out of it
Fatman does list the IFS for a 61-66, it's the 60" model. 61-64 IFS kits are all the same. I was going to go with a Fatman Fabrications IFS. After much feedback and research, I'm not going with an IFS set up. I'm going to be running way too much engine weight (385 series) and too much horsepower (680+) to worry about the inferior, weak available IFS aftermarket kits. I'm sticking with the heavier leaf, straight axle stock set-up.
The guys over at the 48-60 forum did an excellent job writing 12 (I think) tech articles on different front suspension options for the old Ford trucks. All of this info is relevant as their frames are the same width as ours. So, anything in those articles will work for ours. It will come down to what your plans for the truck are, your budget, your skills, etc.
BTW, their IFS tech series is found under the Articles/Specs button at the top of this page.
Yep, thanks for all the info guys. I'm definitely planning big cubic inches. I'd like to do a big ford...but I happen to have a line on a good low miles 500inch cadillac that's just dying to go in there....we'll see.
