I gotta a good oppurtnite to maybe buy a 03-04 6.0L diesel truck. At work ive had nothing but problems with em, turbos, egrs, injectors,. I have had 1 truck with 40,000 on it go through 2 turbos, wt$@%*, havent they fixxed that the turbo problems, egr and injectors? My question is have they really updated anything or are they still haveing the same problems? What kind of problems have you guys had with your experinses? Should i put my money and time into it or am i gonna have problems? I dont mind small stupid problems but i aint gonna pay for a turbo when its outta warrany, or pay 300 bucks for an injector when they go and have to pull the cab off to work on it. So all honesty should i buy a 7.3L or if the 6.0Ls been worked on will it be ok, thnxs all answer will be apprecated Jmac
Yeah it'd be a hard call. Like LVEILLON stated, get and Oasis report or Carfax if it's an 03-04 truck. If it's an 05 or newer, I think you'd be in the clear. Sure, there's a slight chance an 05 or newer could have issues, but it probably won't be nearly as bad as an earlier 6.0. The 7.3 is a great engine ( I have one ) but it really seems Ford/Navistar have a huge majority of the 6.0 bugs worked out. Most, if not all the guys I've talked to with 05-06 6 liter trucks tell me they've had no problems. Good luck finding the right truck!
alot of the issues are how the trucks are treated, maintainenced, how long they sit up. there are guys with 03s with little to no problems then theres the other trucks .....
heres the deal, the trucks im looking at have had turbo, egr problems. They have been replaced by the ford dealer. Have these parts been updated so they will not fail or will the problem re accur agian if they already had problems from your guys experinces. I am trying to figure that out. I dont wanna rip my cab off my truck when my turbo fails when im driving it. I know what 7.3Ls are ive been around em worked on em and you cant kill em, are trucks at work got 330k+ and still ticking away, and belive me they have been abused the **** out of, guys always going over service with em and womping the hell out of em doing things they shouldnt do and they still run like bears. These 6.0Ls we got turbos, injectors, egrs are the commons, we had a motor blow in one of em, ford problem tho they screwed up when they did work on the motor so they took the blame for that. I just wanna buy one rest assured im not gonna have big problems where its gonna cost me dealry and im gonna be stuck all night fixxing it in my garage. Please in put would help thnxs jmac
JMac444...The greatest thing about this site is that you can "Search" for each item/part you are concerned about and spend a week or more reading and interpreting the exact info that you are requesting.
whether the truck has had 1 turbo or 50, maintainence is really a big part, plus how you run these babies. drive 'em like you stole 'em, they will smile big as the day is long. yes something will break, but if it is that big of a deal you get a 5/100000 warranty on almost everything on the engine. everything breaks even 7.3s
Like said, I think its how you maintain them and drive them, Its mostly the trucks that dont get the fuel filters changed frequently, or oil changes done on time, or dont get driven hard enough that have all the problems. But I also think theres a few "bad" 6.0s out there, and alot of "bad" techs that dont know how to work on these advanced motors.
Most of all the 6.0Ls i do work on have been maintained well, oil changes every 5000, and fuel filters every 10,000, weve had all the stupid common problems, like everyone else, but ill just have to wait and see, everything i own or touch i maintain very well and use only wix or napa filters with quailty oils, so ill just have to see how this plays out thanks guys.
You may want to do some research here on the wix/napa fuel filter discussions. My understanding, from reading posts on FTE, is that they lack the required water block that the factory filters have. Water getting to the injectors is often thought to be a cause of injector related problems.
Just relating what I've read, but it make sense to me, and I plan to stick with the factory fuel filters...
