AOD "phantom" downshifting

Howdy everyone..

I've been reading a lot, trying to find some info here on previous forums, but can only find similar posts for the windstar, and trucks with a c6, or the E4OD

I have a 94 f150 with the AOD with 97k on it. For the past couple of years, I've noticed that sometimes the tranny will downshift out of OD for a couple of seconds, and then back into OD. Sometimes it will downshift out of 3rd into 2nd momentarily, and then back (much less frequent).

It seems to do it more often when well warmed up, but has (very seldom) done this when cold. This is not a frequent problem (maybe once or twice a week), and it only seems to do it once, and then stop. At first, I thought it was slipping, but then noticed if I stayed on the throttle, it was just engaged in a lower gear. The tranny stays cool, I have a heavy duty 4core rad with the HD trans cooler, and also have two more satellite trans coolers (she tows real well). I change the fluid every 12k so I don't get bored, and the filter is about six months old.

The tranny shifts very well, smooth and solid, and the shifting has never annoyed me enough to fix it until now. I will be moving (hauling a load) to florida in a few weeks (from indiana) and it's a trip that she has made several times before without any incident. The problem actually seems to be getting better, but I just wonder if she'll be okay, or if I should get this fixed before I get into the mountains.

I use her to tow and haul all the time, and no problems.. I make the long trip all the time, too.. just never hauled for that long a distance, and don't wanna be stuck halfway up a hill.

any ideas? - similar problems?

thanks in advance..
