Powersteering-Pump or Gearbox
Hey ya'all!!
I just bought a 92 150xlt short box 4x4 and it has a few issues. So to help my baby I need to diagnos her issue.
The powersteering DOES NOT work. There is some leaking running down along the gearbox onto to the linkage, have not isolated the leak yet.
Is there a way to troubleshoot, if I may have a bad pump or a gearbox?
Any info on this would be great.
ALso with 160k on her. Any known issues I should be looking for? She is a bit rusty, and I have to replace the front tank.

Does your power steering not work at all or just very little? Depending on the volume of your leak the pump may not be building sufficient presure. I'd start by spraying everything with 'Engine Brite' to clean all the greece off of everything. then top up your power stering fluid and look for a wet oily spot along the hose, fittings and pump. If your pump is working when it's low or out of fluid and your engine is running when your turn the wheel it should sound like someone's ball are being crushed.
As for your gas tank make shure you buy the correct size tank. I though you could pick and choose. You can't! There are 16 and 19 Gallon side saddle tanks. It's not cheep but consider changing your sending unit and pump. They come separatly and if you've used the pump alot they will wear out.
My advice (I'm changing both my tanks, and bought the wrong side saddle) Change the sending unit, pump and straps. On the side saddle tank cut the straps with a grinder or shears. Straps are abut 20$ CDN, then grind off the bolts and start new it'll make your life alot easyer.
When your removing the fuel lines be careful there some sort of P.O.S. plastic line and if you kink it, it's f&^%ed.
