Just bought my first Ranger. Am going to park my E150 Van with gas prices the way they are. Its a 1990 1 owner XLT v6 auto 135,000 mi, 4.0. Solid but needs much tlc. Brakes, shocks, exhaust, water pump. ect. The bottom of the core support is completed rusted thur but I can repair that. Appricate any advice, things to look for, promblem areas, ect. Thanks, Jim
Brakes are easy in this truck, IMHO. Shocks aren't bad at all (unless you're like me and had dual exhaust...I ended up hacking mine off lol). Exhaust might be easy or not, what's wrong with it? Water pump not bad at all, how do you know it's bad, is it weeping?
Water pump is definately peeing and has been for some time. Trail is very defined. How common is the 4.0 in a 90 Ranger? Most others seem to have a 2.something or 3.0. Any info on the 4.0 would be appreciated. Also noticed the ball joints have no fgrease fittings are these prone to problems? Thanks, Jim
I think they are all equally common. the 4.0 is a strong enogh engine to move things, and with 4.10's it will pull plenty for the size truck it is. if you have the 3.55's or better, they make for a hell of a racer. i dont have many problems with mine, but i SERIOUSLY moded it, turbo, computer, intake, boring it out to a 4.5(still in the works). my engine has over 100,000 miles, but it's got plenty of new parts. from what i hear, the 3.0 is slightly more reliable. But i dont have any problems with the 4.0.
The 4.0l is a good engine, actually it is a stroked/bored version of the 2.something you refer to (the actual displacement is 2.9l). The 4.0l heads are slightly prone to cracking if overheated, but not like the 2.9l heads were. They have similar lifter wear issues, so service is important. Of the 2 engines, the 4.0l is more desirable IMHO for several reasons, the heads are stronger, they are more powerful, and mileage is about the same. The 3.0l replaced the 2.9l as the small V-6, overall I would say the 3.0l was an improvement in terms of durability, but not by much, both are solid. It sounds like you've got a nice truck, once you iron the bugs out, I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the replies/comments. Just finished pulling the water pump. Noticed fan is cracked between every blade somme all the way thru. Will be replacing that and maybe the fan clutch also. Otherwise found no surprises will start puttn things back together soon and then get started on the brakes. Thanks again for all the help. Frank_65
