I am by far from being a motorhead. But everytime I go into an auto parts store I always see Oxygen Sensors on the rack behind the counter. Now...I have an F-150 with 110,000 miles. I have spark knock that I cannot seem to get rid of without using high grade gasoline. Would replacing my oxygen sensor do any good for me? Would it give me better gas mileage? Or should I just wait till the check engine light goes on before I replace it? Also....where is the oxygen sensor located?
What mileage are you getting now? The upstream sensor is on the intake tube. Make sure it is facing correctly. un hook your intake and look down it to see if it is pointing the right direction.
If you have a 5.4 you have 4 of them. They are located on the exhaust pipes behind the headers. They are easy to spot since you will see a probe stuck into the exhaust pipe at 4 locations. Usually a bad sensor will trip the check engine light. You can remove them and clean them up. They tend to carbon up and simple cleaning them off can sometimes help.
