If your dual mass clutch is not slipping and does not make noise, how can you tell when it should be replaced (before it fails). On one of the other posts 5/8 of an inch was the limit but where is this measured?, the edge of the flywheel? (I haven't got the engine shop manual). Thanks
Pull the dust cover off the bottom of the tranny so you can see the flywheel.
With the truck in neutral you can rock the flywheel back and forth.
5/8" is the max amount of play you should see.
Less is great, more means you are getting about due for a new flywheel.
I saw one last winter that all the springs were out. It made a lot of noise and had probably 2 plus inches of free travel, but the owner was able to drive it to the shop.
Thanks Dave. I took a quick look by taking out only 3 bolts and I likely have closer to 3/4 of an inch. I've ordered a Luk clutch and will upgrade to the new hydraulic system.
