Evolution and the PCM?

My question is whether the dealer is able to tell that i have been using a tuner on my truck, by hooking up their diagnostic tool up to it. I heard that they can look at the RPMs and torqu output or something like that and tell whether its been running stock. The reason that im concernd is because this could void my warrenty.

There have been posts lately about Ford tightening up on performance mods voiding warranties. Best advice I can give you, don't do any performance mods until your warranty is up.

Hi wolfe1104,

Actually, with our tuning device for these vehicles, once you have returned back to stock, typically they cannot tell it's been changed without sending the PCM back to Ford.

The most important thing to know is what you actual rights are under the law, and by the provisions of the Magnuson-Mos Warranty Act, you have the right to do modifications to your vehicle and have the warranty remain intact. See, by law the automaker has to prove that the modification you did was the actual cause of a directly related failure - so it's a matter of simply choosing your modifications wisely.

Ford has no idea whose aftermarket tuning is safe or not, so if you ask them directly, of course they're going to say you cannot do that - but you still have your rights under the law, and that cannot be taken away from you.

Doing things like *properly* R&D'd tuning, a good intake kit, cat-back exhaust, and other minor bolt ons, if they are from reputable companies that have proper R&D in their products, generally don't cause a problem. Now bolt on a supercharger or a nitrous setup, and you can usually kiss the powertrain warranty goodbye, of course - but then we have supercharger kits available that even provide a replacement powertrain warranty, so we have a lot of customers who buy a brand new F-150, we ship the supercharger to their Ford dealership who installs it, and they drive out with a brand new supercharger F-150 that is still fully covered under warranty, between the factory warranty and the supercharger manufacturer's powertrain warranty.

So what it's really about is doing research, and talking to those who are truly experts and professionals at modifying these vehicles - something we have been doing for 15 years in this specific platform.

If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below, & we'll be happy to help.
