alt over charging
jump in the truck this morning to go for a ride and i notice the bat light comes on and the gauge is pegged at 18 but only hen engine speed is above 2300 RPM below that rpm it woul be fine

With a dummy light and the gauge bad, it sounds like your voltage regulator has checked out... Use a multi meter to verify the overcharging. I think the regulator is internal on our alternators. So a replacement is in your future.
