well--a brand new k&n from the factory took the rings out of my 94 idi turbo--in less than 10,000 miles--your choice--air flow tests say the k&n only flows 2% more--by independent lab tests--not k&n tests!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not worth it----
i've run the K&N filters in many different cars/trucks that i've had and been very satisfied with their performance every time. the one in my '94 idit works well, increased fuel mileage by 1 mpg, has less restriction, and goes further between servicing. just my 2 cents, but i would use the stock K&N replacement filter and fashion a cold air inlet to maximize my results
I've been using a K&N filter for about 2 years and so far it works great but I only drive in dusty conditions occasionally when I'm camping and from what I've read on other posts the amount of dust you drive thru appears to be a major factor if your engine survives or not. With the stock filter my air restriction guage would begin to register a little within one or two weeks. With the K&N it doesn't register. Anyhow, now that I've read the other posts I think I'll pick up another stock air filter and change out the K&N for camping just in case. What I would like to do is put a tee fiting in and be able to switch between filters (I'm not that concerned about loosing a little air flow) but on the other hand it's not much work to change filters.
I got K&N's on both my N/A and turbo trucks. Gives me about 1 to 1/2 mpg which is significant at today diesel prices.
I did just what you showed on your picture above to my turbo motor originally by removing the stock filter entirely and bolting a filter like that to the side of my inlet box. The only trouble is I lost my cold air intake by doing so. Eventually switched back to the K&N stock replacement with a custom 4" air intake.
The K&N definetely has better air flow, my air restriction indicator on the turbo motor usually showed vacuum on the turbo suction, now there is no vacuum anymore even if I run the engine at high rpm under full load.
Of course, don't use the K&N filters if you are in very dusty condition, it is a more open filter and will let fine dust pass right thru which could damage the engine.
