i just bought a 85 f-250 with the 6.9 diesel two wheel drive, but anyway, the brake lights wont work at all i have power to one side of the switch where the pedal connects to the booster, but no power on the other side of the switch, does mean the switch is junk, or could it be the body control module, that plugs on right under the steering where it goes through the firewall its a computer board, but it has brakes on it ignition, power, and stuff like that on a sticker on the back of the box im saying this because it was in the back seat, and then i found the harnesses so i assumed they went together but nothing new happens, so could it be the switch, everything is a little chopped under there, all the fuses are good, and i played around with a test light for hours, but im not sure what the problem is please help
you need power to both sides of the switch when you press the brake pedal so it sounds like the switch is bad there is no body control module on an 85 what you may have is part of a trailer brake controler. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your truck it has wiring schematics in the back of the book. Rear brake power goes from the brake light switch into the turn sinal switch then back out to the rear taillights via the rear lighting harness wich plugs together on the engine side of the firewall.
i have all lights working on the truck except for the brake lights and the back up lights which i just discovered, hazard lights work headlights and etc. my only problem is the brake lights i can barely fit my fingers to reach the switch on the brake pedal, but ive tested it and its only getting power to one side even with the pedal depressed, im so fustrated with this whole project please help
Normally on trucks with cruise control there are 2 brake switches..... the brake pedal switch attached at the end of the booster arm up inside the assembly is the brake light switch....... not the plastic plunger switch which is for cruise shutdown.
One more possible source of your problem could be the turn signal wiring harness inside the steering column. I had a problem on my 85 F-250 where brake fuse was blowing whenever I put on turn signal with brakes applied. The harness cost me around $70. It includes contacts for turn signal, brakes, hazard lights, etc. Just a thought .. Garcia
