250 Used Choices

Whew! I am a novice with the 250 diesel and need some more help. I spent today combing the low country looking at used trucks. Please give me your opinions on the following for purchase: All are supercab or crewcab and most Lariats

1. A 2000 7.2 with 165000 miles that is getting 14 mpg. It has had the turbo replaced about 2 years ago and other than that the owner reports no problems and it drives great. Price $17800

2. A 2004 6.0 with 145000 miles. It is at dealership and reportedly is rough start in the morning and then idles fine. They are replacing injectors as first try of correcting. In excellent condition appearance wise. Price $17000

3. A 2002 5.4 gas with 98000 miles. Looks great but pricey at $21000.

Should I pursue any of these or stay away from any of them. Thanks so much for your guidance.

Well... considering you're posting in the 7.3 section...

My vote is the 7.3 'Stroker

Steer clear of the 6.0 - I wouldn't even think about an '03 or '04 6.blow - much less one that is showing problems

OK, so to start things off, (1)165k for near book is ridiculous.
If your spending this sort of money you should be looking for a decent truck. I would be looking around 10k for that many miles, and thats only if there were no or very few problems.

second, your gonna need to decide what kind of truck you want. Theres a big difference between a 5.4, a 6.0, and a 7.3. For a daily driver and occasional work truck with mediocre performance the 5.4 will get the job done. If you want a smile on your face and some driving excitement with minimal fuss along woith some towing power, the 6.0 will deliver, though I can't comment on reliability. If you want to build a strong, reliable, tow vehicle the 7.3 is a workhorse but takes some coaxing to make it enjoyable (chip).

So, for what it's worth, I recently purchased a '00 7.3 xlt at CC LB 4x4 w/ 94k for 18k... I tow ~ 10k about 6x a year, and don't like driving a slug. My truck gets the job done.
