Starter question
What exactly is that thing and how would the outside of it get scratched.
I do know that when the beast was running, about 1 out of every ten times starting would grind teeth. The ring gear had both sides of it worn because of this issue, as I guess someone had had the ring gear reversed at one point.
Any ideas? I don't want to put on a new starter and end up having some issue with it later.
Since I don't have a clue what you have for an engine, I can't begin to guess at what your "scratched" problem really is. Here are some causes I have run across. Usually the problems are created by some human error. As a rule FoMoCo starters do tend to be rather bullet proof & reliable when all is correct.
Some FoMoCos are A/T or Manual Trans specific when it comes to starters. Others require a torque plate between bell housing and engine block which some people leave out creating gear engagement depth & set problems. Other times, on the "franchise" aftermarket, rebuilt starters a wrong bendix drive was installed.
So you see there could be a lot of causes for the damage & problems you described.
But I will tell you this, if the ring gear teeth are severly worn/ damaged replace the ring gear or flywheel with the correct one or you will be doing a lot of starter work in the future, IMHO. . . .

I'm closing in on getting this running after a rebuild and I don't remember any issues with this setup besides what was already mentioned.
The ring gear has already been replaced, I was just describing what it looked like before as a little more info on what the starter issue might have been.

I bought a reman anyway, so hopefully it won't do it again.
