2x4 to 4x4 Conversion Questions

Have an 81 F150 2x4 to convert to 4x4. (c6 tranny)
I have read the article on this site but have more questions.

1. - Are here differing transfer cases from 80 -96 that can be used and if so what are the differences - pros & cons.

2. Regarding the front axles; any changes through 80 - 96 that are prefered amongst these years.

Thanx in advance for your input

The cases got stronger as the years changed. The broncos had a fixed rear yoke and the Fseries trucks had a rear slip yoke in the case. Most people prefer the 1356 case. Keep in mind you can always bolt up a 205 case and have the strongest case made in your application.

There is one or two years where ford used an odd ball set up in the front hubs on the TTB axles but I can not recall what years. Some where around 84 maybe? You must use a 1/2 ton TTB axle in a 1/2 tom truck. The F250 and F350 are not direct bolt ins and require some mod work to make fit. As with the t-case you can go one step better and install a straight axle from a 78 79 truck. This swap is known as an SAS. Search for SAS and you will find plenty of info.

87 is the goofy year for the 1/2 ton front hubs. 1 year only brakes and lockouts, something to avoid. As for swap axles, I prefer the pre-1982 TTB. It doesn't have a c-clip on the stub axle at the differential, so you don't have to worry about doing the c-clip elimination and using the valve spring to keep everything together.

BUT, I'd use the axle closest to the year that your truck is for the ease of swapability. That way you don't have to worry about changes in brake calipers and the such.

However, when I did my swap everyone said it wouldn't work (1980 TTB into an 85 truck) because according to Ford literature a 1985 truck uses different caliper retention than a 1980 truck. My calipers hooked right onto the 1980 spindles, no mods whatsoever. Take everything Ford says about parts changes with a grain of salt
