2x4 to 4x4 Conversion Questions

Have an 81 F150 2x4 to convert to 4x4. (c6 tranny)
I have read the article on this site but have more questions.

1. - Are here differing transfer cases from 80 -96 that can be used and if so what are the differences - pros & cons.

2. Regarding the front axles; any changes through 80 - 96 that are prefered amongst these years.

Thanx in advance for your input

hey zed,
the dana 44 ttb was pretty much the stock 4x4 front diff during the 80-86 run(1/2 ton's). Depending on what you're planning to do, go for a straight axle if you can. The ttb IFS front end is a bit of a pain, regarding alignment and such, plus its not at all great if you want to do serious off roading.
I have a 1980 f-150 4x4 flareside, 302, c-6, and a NP208 transfer case. Regarding the transfer case, is the c-6 in your truck now, or do you have a 4x4 specific c-6 waiting to be put in during the conversion? The tail/output shafts are different on 4x2 and 4x4 trannys.
If you're wanting a basic 4x4 conversion, try to find a 4x4 donor truck or full size bronco from close to your year truck, with same engine/tranny. You should be able to bolt everything up from there.
I'm sure I'm rehashing what you already know, but its just me and my 2 cents worth here.lol

Good luck,
Dave S

I have a 400 with the c6 in there right now. (2x4)
I believe the tranny has to come apart to change the output shafts..true?

Define serious...
My aim is dual purpose,... get into some off-road camping / exploring to some 4x4 forestry service roads and be able to tow a trailer or boat at others times and at be able to get off road .

How are the brakes on those staight axle models.

Thanx

I'd think twice before doing a conversion. It may be cheaper to sell your truck and get one that has 4x4 already.

If your dead set on doing the swap vs buying a different truck (with gas prices they way they are a 4x4 f150 can be had cheap) then you need to get a t case, 4x4 tranny, front d shaft, rear d shaft, front axle, (rear axle to match gears) and shifter boot. If you would like to keep the current transmission, and if you have some fabing skills you can run a divorced t case setup, but then you will have to get custom driveshafts.

Yah...I gave it a moment of concideration and weighted the pro's and con's. It is easier for me to do a coversion. I have the mechanical and fabrication skills. The truck is mechanically sound and has been an on going make over. I dread the thought of taking on someone elses problems (known or yet to be known) when I know the condition of every mechanical part of the current truck. The other concideration I have...I run dedicated propane and would not run on gasoline again. There would be far more work to purchase another and convert it to the current mechanical form. So that is why I have chosen the conversion.
I really appriciate all the feed back so far, I has been helpful. I welcome more.

Thanx Guys!

That changes everything since you have 'one-of-a-kind' vehicle. I'd look for a complete donor vehicle with a blown engine. Preferably F150, though Bronco will do it if you get an F150 driveshaft.
