There's no such thing as no compression in first gear. Compression is a piston variable and not related to the gear you're in.
Annnnyways, I'm guessing you mean it's not engaging gear properly? I.e. you put in in drive, try and drive away, the engine revs with it going nowhere? If so, does it eventually snap into gear and off you go?
Tranny fluid level? Last time a fluid change with filter was done?
I will assume what you are talking about is a lack of engine braking when you take your foot off the gas in 1st gear. This subject has come up in here more than once but I can't recall the fix. Valve body problem/sticking valve in there/leaking valve body to tranny case gasket (?). There may also be a TSB on this one. I seem to recall that the fix does not require a complete tranny rebuild either. I'd do a search in this forum; try threads over 6 months old.

When I go down a hill in first gear there is no compression on the engine. the tranny seems like it is in nuetral and speeds up.
I had it serviced last month with oil change.
Ah yeah there is a topic about this, and Cowboy's right it's a home fix. I'll do some poking around and see if I can come up with it, I seem to remember it making a commotion back when (that's spelled wrong isn't it?). Tech thread perhaps?
ISSUE:
Some vehicles built prior to 12/1/2001 may exhibit the following shift and engagement conditions:
No 2nd Gear
No 3rd Gear
No Engine Braking In Manual 1st.
Out of specification pressures controlled by the transmission main control valve body separator plate may be the cause.
ACTION:
Verify the condition, the main control valve body separator plate may need to be updated to the latest level. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD><TD width=100>CAUTION</TD><TD>A NEW SEPARATOR 7Z490 MUST BE USED WHEN INSTALLING THE SPECIAL SERVICE KIT 7M203 OR ADDITIONAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE MAY OCCUR. Verify that one or more of the following conditions exist.
Low Line Pressure While In Drive At WOT
No 2nd And/Or No 3rd Gear
No Engine Braking In Manual 1st
DTC P0732, P0733 Or P1762
Install Kit (3L5Z-7M203-JA) to update the main control valve body assembly, refer to the installation procedures found in the kit.
Reinstall the main control by continuing to follow the installation steps listed in the Workshop Manual, in-vehicle service, main control valve body.
After completing the procedure, verify the condition has been corrected.
Clear all DTCs.

Please note the no engine braking in manual first. in drive there will be no engine braking in first gear without majore VB modifications that you don't want to get into. so if tht is the issue it's normal but if it's no engine braking in manual first then the tsb will help.
