Speedometer problems

Hi i am fairly new to the board and had a question that i needed some help with. First off I have a 1990 f250 4x4 with a 351w and 3 speed auto tranny. The speedo hasn't worked since i bought the truck. I put a new speedo gear in it and it roughly worked for about a week then went back out. Sometimes the needle will hop but it mostly stays a 0. I was wondering if the gear inside the transfer case has a burr or is there anything else i should check? any help would be appreciated.

Yes the drive gear could be at fault.
Or you could have the wrong driven gear.

Or the cable might be bad. Take the cable and see if both ends turn as you turn one. See if this still works with any resistance on the loose end.

Most of the times when I had a speedo failure it was the cable.

Good Luck,

well the gear in it to begin with was a 19 tooth and thats what i put in there. I did put a drill on the cable and the speedo was reading that fine. Has anyone ever changed the drive gear? would i have to tear apart the whole t-case?
