E40D hard shifting
Still trying to get this fixed. Replace wiring harness to ECU and have put in a new valve body. The trans shifts hard intermittently and I suspect electrical. Any ideas. The VSS tests out fine. The tranny was rebuilt last year with all the upgrades. My motor in the transfer case does not work and could this cause the hard shift? Thanks.

The ECU is one computer that controls every function of the engine and the tranny. Just about any tranny malfunction will trigger codes. The CEL does not have to be on for codes to be stored either. You can by a code reader or you can just use a paper clip and the CEL will blink the codes out to you. You can do a search on this forum for the specifics, or you can go to fordfuelinjection.com. Whatever you do don't try to guess what the problem is and just start replacing the parts, the computer will tell you exactly whats wrong with it.
