I have a 98 Ranger, extended cab, 2 wheel drive, 4 cylinder engine, manual tranny.
I experienced a sudden loss of power at 40 mph; truck sputtered to a stop; low lights; Dash showing battery discharge. I replaced the battery....same problem.........is this possibly the alternator.......something else....or could it be simply battery cables?
The battery light showing typically indicates an alt problem. So first things first. Voltmeter the alt, see what it's putting out at idle and revved. Should be in the range of 14V.
Check battery cables but I wouldn't bet on it. I'd bet the alt isn't keeping the battery charged which in turn produces the other problems as noted.
I'd run this puppy by your favorite autoparts store for a no cost electrical system check up, via their portable electrical system tester.
It'll properly load test your electrical systems components IN the vehicle & will likely sniff out the culprit/s!!!!
Could be a combination of things as has been suggested, so get it checked out & put right, before throwing parts at the problem. The check up will likely save you money in the long run imo. pawpaw
Thanks for all the responses..........hey PawPaw I did take it to Autozone.........the alternator was a pale horse with 107,000 miles on it....changed it out at home in about 20 minutes.....the toughest part of the job was remounting the belt......running good ever since....life is good...thanks
