i recently put a set of rancho 5000s on my truck and it rides like crap! my truck bounces so hard on the freeway it is hard to see straight. i have been looking at buying a set of bilsteins but they are a lot of money and i wanted to get all your imput. what do you guys think is the best shock and what are some of you guys running? thanks
bilstein. i have the plain style. i imagine the fancier silver ones are even better ride. i am happy with mine though. anything was better than the wore out stockers.
i got the Bilstein 5100's with my DR lift kit. they are pretty pricey, but with the leveling kit spring and the hanger kit, it rides SO much better than stock, even sitting 6.5" higher.

I def don't recomend the Rancho 5000
the 9000 are better and offer better adjustabilty
I have the RS9K style shocks with the in-cab controller
I really like it
BILSTEIN is def a better built shock
I bought the regular bilsteins, and the jury is still out if I would buy them again. They did make a world of improvement of the ride, but then again the bar wasn't set too high because I had worn out original shocks.
I went with Monroe Gas Magnums on my 01 F250 . My travel is mostly SoCal freeways and towing my 5er. Can't complain. My butt-feel properties aren't that good. They are decidedly better than stock. Got 'em for $141.-/4 and free ship at shockwarehouse. Bilsteins cost $260.-/4 and free ship.
I put Monroe Reflex's up front, have yet to do the back, but fronts definately made a huge improvement, I am very happy with them. Relatively inexpensive, 50 ea at NAPA or online for cheaper.
I was going to get the Bilstein 5100's... but then my friend who owns an off-road shop recommended I try the BDS 9500 series. I am very happy I did! They're a great improvment over my worn out stock shocks and my truck definetly handles better. Not to mention the inverted "race style" mounting and the nice brushed stainless appearance He mentioned they're actually manufactured by Edelbrock.
You can read about them here... http://www.bds-suspension.com/products/shocks.php#9500
Or this article written about them... http://www.moabjeeper.com/articles/g...?articleID=285
it depends on the use. unloaded highway driving i would say about 60-75K miles on a stock shock. loaded with a trailer, where the forces of the trailer tongue weight put more stress on the shock, about 50-60K miles. we have a 2000 dually that has 68K towing miles on it, and the shocks could use replacing. im telling dad to get Bilsteins, but he's very frugal to change anything from stock.
something like bilsteins, i would EXPECT 75K+ highway miles on a set before they get mushy and soft, they are expensive enough.
I got to quit reading these posts. I just bought some Bilsteins. About finished every maitenance you can do so i thought what the hell might as well do the shocks. Does anyone need a well used liver ...im selling it on ebay.
