I pulled a light load for the first time in my rig. Everything was great on the flats but the hills caused it to overheat. 3500lb pontoon boat up 7% climb for approx 10 miles; boost = 15psi, 4th gear (manual), 40" X 15.50 Toyo tires 4.56 gears, 40HP Tow from DP, approx. 40MPH., approx. 1900 RPM's, outside temp 110 - 115, A/C on, EGT's around 1000. It began overheating about half way up the hill and I didn't notice til it was almost in the red. Oil temp went to 235 deg F. I had to pull off the road to allow it to cool off.
With all that said, was I pushing this thing to hard or could there be something wrong with the cooling system?
Welcome to the forum. First and cheapest thing to do is pull the radiator and clean all the bugs and crap out of her. Mine would get hot too until I just cleaned the radiator fins out. Regular garden hose and a little patience, then clean everything else in front of it. That would be the first place to start, next go to home depo or lowes and buy screen door screen and fit it behind the grill any way you can. Even if its only attached on the top and floats below the bumper it will slow rocks and catch the bugs before entering fins.
What condition is your cooling system in? When serviced? Flushed? Thermostat
probably needs replacing. I recommend the 203 thermostat(LINK) and the DieselSite billet housing LINK. You wouldn't believe the crud floating around in your cooling system...i've got photos of the "liquid sandpaper" that does a lot of harm.
Nut
Thanks for the quick responses. From the posts I will assume that I should be able to work this truck much harder than the described and that I definitely have some kind of cooling system problem.
As for diagonostics:
coolant is clean and green
no air-flow restriction due to bugs or other stuff
57K miles on truck(have only owned it for 1k miles of it so unsure of maint.)
only overheated with the load
non-loaded eng oil temp is 205F regardless of 40, 80, or 100HP tune or driving style.
I have been reading about water pump impellers deteriorating so I might swap that out first.
I had the exact same problem....i replaced the thermostat and went with the 203, then the waterpump (rebuilt one from napa for $100), then the clutch fan (wasn't working)....and after that still overheated....so i finally did the radiator and hoses.....now, no problems....and a whole new cooling system! I'd start with the radiator and check for any blocks or holes.....i had 170k miles on mine, so just went with a new one.
By the way, i am not a trained mechanic, but all the repairs i did were pretty easy to do myself. Just be careful of getting the fan clutch off....rent the tools from the autostore.
