Cooling issue
Last thing, could advancing or retarding the injection pump cause the overheat?
Thanks in advance,

If it is working properly you should hear a faint gurggling sound as you fill your engine with coolant.
If the ball is plugged up then air or steam can't escape and the hot coolant might not reach the thermostat so it can open and the truck may overheat.
Sometimes older thermostats start to leak a little and any air is discharged thru the leak path. A fouled ball check is not a problem in this situation; however if you decide to install a new thermostat and fail to clean the ball check that you may have more overheating problems with the new thermostat than you had with the old one as suddenly air or steam has got nowhere to go and vapourlocks the engine coolant loop.
