building a 460

hey ppl of FTE, im working on buildin a 460 up. i do believe its a 79 engine build. thru some of the other posts ive been reading the 60's 460 IS the motor to have. i understand mainly becuase they "detuned" in the 70's for polution control. my main question is to get more power out of mine would i order a set of timing gears and chain for a late 60's 460, and try to find heads off the same year of motor? would this bring back the power n tourqe i keep reading about? hope to hear all ur comments and answers. thanks.

Yes on the timing chain. Ask for one for a 1970 460 or 68-69 429. Your heads will flow just as good as the older castings. Their combustion chambers are smaller and they have rocker studs are the only difference. You could use flattop pistons with the later model heads and have a good streetable compression ratio.

thanks, i looked in to the numbers on the heads and block, heads are D3VEA2 and the block is D1VE6015A2B. on the cam timing gear i found DOAE is this a 1970 timing gear set? im more than likely goin to swap the timing to 429 specs.

ok the engine is a 73-78 internally balanced engine and it already has the early timing set in it. Before going out and spending the money on a set of early heads I would check to see what pistons are in it. If stock your still going to raise your compression way up to the point of having problems with pump gas, if someone has put flattops in it and you put the early heads on your not going to be able to run anything but race fuel.

the pistions are stock (dished lookin ones). so if its the earlier 460 timing set, switchin to early 429 timing set would be a waste of money, correct? im basically goin to give it a simple low cost rebuild ( sum day down the line a bigger badder build is to come) ive heard sum bad stories about the effects of "emissions controlin measures" in these motors, if mine sounds to have all the good parts, ill just order new parts of what i have already. ill get the heads checkd out if not rebuilt (D3VEA2 sound like good heads according to what ive been readin on here). after doin sum home work on this motor/rebuild, i just didnt want to put all this time, money and effort into a rebuild that could have been alot more with a few simple parts. thanks guys.

I would have the block square decked and if possible get the piston deck hieght down to .010 minimum, and have the heads milled atleast enough to make sure flat. that will help bring the compression back up a little. And you alrready have the early timing set so unless it needs replaced due to wear I would leave it.
