sometimes when i reach in and start my trk and do a walk around i'll smell antifreeze. the overheating type smell, seems like im burning it, could it be a head gasket? its been pinging when i pull a hill on the hwy. no performance loss and antifreeze level hasn't gone down since i topped it off last wk. and the oil is clean
don't assume the worst. If you smell the atifreeze burning then I would think that you have a small leak from one of your hoses on to you intake manifold. look at all your hoses closely and look for discoloration from a leak that is evaporating as soon as it hits the hot engine.
Have you heard a babbling brook sound from behind the glove box? It took a year from hearing the sound to finding coolant on the ground when the heater core leak got bigger. Heater core is an easy replacement project. Of course hoses, clamps, water pump and radiator should also be considered. You could have a small leak that drips under pressure, evaporates, then you smell but do not see when cold.
I would suspect crossover pipe and heater hoses first. Makes sure the clamps are tight too and that they are not stripped. I had one on a heater hose that looked and felt tight (just not tight enough) but was stripped and would let just a bit of coolant seep when the engine was hot.
