axle seal replacement

I have been smelling something like burnt oil around rear axles,figured it was time to replace seals,is this a major job or fairly easy any comments would be appreciated

I see by your profile you have a '99 F250. I don't know if it has disc rear brakes like my '02 F350 or dual wheels. If you have disc brakes then the emergency brake is a pair of shoes inside a small drum cast integrally with the rotor. If your axle has been leaking then you have probably soaked the brake shoes. If your e-brake has not been holding recently there is your problem.

I am looking at the same problem on my F350. I think the hardest part is handling the dual wheel setup.
