okay, sometimes i can just get in the truck and start it like normal, then other times i'll turn the key and nothin happens, so now i have to pop the hood and get out my plyers and jump the solenoid to start my truck, why would this happen, i think the one i have doesnt handle wutever power im throwin at it, are thier performance solenoids??
Before blaming the solenoid, check all of your battery and solenoid connections. Make sure they aren't corroded or dirty.
9 out of 10 times cleaning all of these contacts and putting corrosion inhibitor on them will make the truck start like an absolute dream. Also, don't forget that the mounting tab for the solenoid to the inner fender is the ground for the solenoid, make sure that's clean, too.
As for performance solenoids, there aren't really any out there. But what I'd recommend is to drop the $30 on a Motorcraft solenoid instead of whatever inhouse brand your parts shop carries. I was replacing the autozone solenoid about every 6 months, I've had the same motorcraft for 2 years. Definitely worth the saved hassle.
take a look at your starter.. mine was coming loose and grounding out on the headers and was doing the same thing. I ended up towing it home because I thought I had burned the ignition out and all I had to do was tighten the starter bolts I am still using the same solenoid and cables, and have put about 3,000 miles on it since then.
I have had bad luck with Auto Zone solenoids, and others like them. I had one last a week once. Since going with a CarQuest I haven't had to replace it since and that's 3 years. The other thing that comes to mind is the ignition switch going bad on the steering colum. Mine started to seperate. and weird stuff would happen like work sometimes and other times not work. So might check that, or better yet if you have done what the others have said here just change it out. They aren't much, but a pain sometimes to install. If you half crippled up like me.
If it's an automatic it is probably your neutral safety switch....or, if it's a stick like my 86 where you have to push in the clutch to start it, it is still probably the safety switch at the clutch.
